Brown Investment Advisory Inc., a Baltimore investment firm that caters to the well-heeled, has opened an office in Washington, D.C., at a time when other investment firms are cutting staff and eliminating departments.

The 3,000-square-foot office on H Street in Washington's business district will be the first in the Capital region for Brown Investment Advisory (www.brownia.com), which bought itself out from under BT Alex. Brown in 1998 and now boasts $5 billion in assets under management

The firm employs approximately 80 people at its Baltimore headquarters at 19 South St next to the Alex. Brown building and a small office in Wilmington, Del.
