Blood Transfusion Most Cost-Effective Option For Anemia Treatment.(Brief Article)

2001 NOV 15 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Blood transfusion is the most cost-effective way to improve hemoglobin levels in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, researchers in the United States report.

"Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions or erythropoietin (EPO) can be used to evade the detrimental effects of anemia during radiotherapy, but the economic consequences of selecting either intervention are not well defined," explained Dr. Brian Kavanagh and colleagues at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Erythropoietin therapy is significantly more expensive than blood transfusion, with no apparent added benefit, Kavanagh and coworkers found.

The researchers evaluated the cost of the two treatment modalities in cervical cancer patients treated with radiation therapy (including brachytherapy) and cisplatin-based chemotherapy. All patients received red blood cell transfusions when hemoglobin levels dropped below 10 g/dl, and their cost was compared with the projected cost of EPO treatment based on published reports.

The average cost of blood transfusions was US$990 per patient, study data showed. This included the cost of the blood products and laboratory fees, as well as the projected cost of transfusion-related infections.
