2001 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Ten drug companies have responded to a government call for information on how the nation's vaccine makers could produce about 250 million doses of smallpox vaccine by the end of next year, federal officials said.
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said that his agency sent letters to eight companies requesting the information and asking for an estimate of the cost. Extra responses came from companies that heard about the government's request.
Thompson asked Congress for $509 million to pay for the smallpox vaccine and he said Wednesday that the response from the companies suggests "we will bring it in at that price."
Responses to the letter were due by Wednesday, but Thompson said he has extended the deadline by one day because "we possibly may have more responses."
Thompson also said that the government will streamline the process for making and approving the vaccine. He expects production to start by the end of November.
Dr. Donald A. Henderson, the head of the HHS bioterrioism committee, said that the new smallpox vaccine will be made rapidly using new technology.
