2001 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The United Kingdom government is to introduce a preschool booster vaccination against pertussis (commonly known as whooping cough) from November 5, 2001, to reduce further illness and death from whooping cough.
It follows the recommendation from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) that a combined diptheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine or DTaP be given at around four years of age.
Currently the pertussis vaccine is given as part of a series at two, three, and four months of age. Despite the high vaccine uptake at around 95%, pertussis continues to pose a health risk and there is evidence that babies may be catching pertussis from older siblings or possibly parents.
In England and Wales there are an estimated 35,000 general practitioner consultations, 5500 inpatient days, and upwards of nine deaths annually from pertussis. The introduction of an acellular booster at four years of age is expected to considerably reduce the morbidity and mortality figures.
