2001 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- An investigational vaccine for the treatment of colorectal cancer, one of the most common and deadly forms of cancer, has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical trial.
Alvac, developed by Aventis Pasteur, the vaccine arm of Aventis Pharma, will be studied in combination with standard chemotherapy. The multicenter U.S. trial is expected to begin enrolling patients in the fall of 2001.
The colorectal trial will test the safety and immunogenicity of the Alvac-based vaccine. The study will examine the safety of the vaccine when administered with chemotherapy and will determine how the immune response to the vaccine is affected by chemotherapy that is typically offered to patients with recurrent colorectal cancer. The study is being conducted at major cancer centers across the United States and is expected to last approximately one year.
