2001 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- PowderJect Pharmaceuticals Plc (PJP), a specialty vaccines company, and its wholly owned subsidiary PowderJect Vaccines Inc., have, in association with the University of Pittsburgh, been awarded $1 million to support the development of a powdered DNA vaccine against HIV. The funding, which was awarded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is for a one-year period starting October 2001.
The award will support the development of PowderJect's novel DNA vaccine approaches, including the use of proprietary DNA adjuvants designed to enhance cellular and mucosal immune responses that are thought to be important to treat HIV. This work follows on from promising results achieved in earlier preclinical studies, which the company announced last year. In these studies, DNA vaccination via the needle-free PowderJect system demonstrated qualities that scientists believe will be required by an effective HIV vaccine.
