2001 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The combination botanical therapy called PC-SPES has been found to be effective at affecting measures that indicate prostate cancer activity, according to Sophie Chen, PhD, a leading expert in drug development.

"PC-SPES means hope for prostate cancer," said Dr. Chen, associate research professor at New York Medical College in Valhalla and the director of NovaSpes Research Laboratory in Hawthorne, New York. "In fact, PC-SPES is delivering more than hope to prostate cancer patients. The pharmacological action of the mixture involves multiple molecular pathways and can be translated into three factors: (1) anticancer activity, (2) phytoestrogenic activity, (3) immune modulation activity. These activities are demonstrated in the in vitro, animal model and several clinical studies."

Dr. Chen spoke at the recent 20th Annual Science Reporters Conference of the American Medical Association in San Francisco. The immunotherapy drug is composed of botanical compounds and extracts from seven Chinese herbs (Dendranthema morifolium; Ganoderma lucidium; Glycyrrhiza uraensis; Isatis indigotica; Panax pseudo-ginseng; Rabdosia rubescens; Scutellaria baicalensis) and one American herb (Serenoa repens). In the laboratory, each compound has demonstrated the ability to directly kill cancer cells or stimulate the body's immune system to help fight cancer. The synergy of all of the herbs together makes the combination a powerful anticancer treatment, according to Dr. Chen.

The anticancer activity is similar to the mechanism of low doses of conventional chemotherapy. PC-SPES suppresses cancer-causing genes such as Bcl-2 while boosting the immune system, thus promoting the body's natural cancer suppressor genes, p53 and Bax. "In most cancer patients, some natural cancer suppressor genes, like p53 and Bax, are missing or the genes have mutated," said Dr. Chen. The suppression of the cancer-promoting genes BCL-2 is similar to conventional chemotherapy, but the building up of the immune system contrasts with the chemotherapeutic ...
