Visitors to the Mount Vesuvius area will soon be able to see more than indistinguishable ruins surrounding the ancient volcano. A new cultural leisure park in Pompeii--to be partially completed by 2003--will feature simulator rides that take visitors through a gamut of sensations, including the smell of burning lava and the sounds of Vesuvius's fury. A giant IMAX 3-D theater will show volcano films, and in a virtual-reality center visitors will be able to choose how they want to experience the A.D. 79 eruption, perhaps witnessing it as an escaping villager or maybe even a bird would.
