A group of organic farmers in Saskatchewan have laid the groundwork to sue food biotechnology companies, charging that biotech canola has damaged the market for the organic crop.
The farmers have formed the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate and hired the lawyer who defended farmer Percy Schmeiser in his high-profile legal battle with Monsanto over use of biotech seed in his fields.
Attorney Terry Zakreski said the first step would be to raise C$50,000 to get the lawsuit rolling. He said he hopes to file the lawsuit next year after the provincial government introduces new rules for class-action litigation.
