South American countries are expanding the scope of their organic farming operations.

Ecuador, the world's leading exporter of bananas, is rapidly increasing production of organic fruit and vegetables. The number of certified organic farms in the country has multiplied in recent years. Most are medium sized operations.

At present, Ecuador has 11,000 hectares of certified organic crops, but there is no dominant producer. There are 11 companies that produce and market organic bananas. All have internationally accepted accreditation and the ability to comply with the European Union's stringent traceability standards.
