Former Clark County Finance Director Guy Hobbs will chair the eight-person Governor's Task Force on Tax Policy, according to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who expects the other members to be finalized and announced this week.
The task force will examine the state's taxes, and its work is expected to be the basis of a tax overhaul Guinn vows will be introduced the first day of the 2003 Legislature.
Hobbs' appointment was agreed upon by Guinn, Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, and Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, the governor said. The other appointees still are being discussed, but the trio is looking for balance so various groups are represented, including representatives of gaming, mining, business, education and health care.
"Once they're appointed, they're pretty much on their own," Guinn said.
Hobbs has a good reputation, described by one tax expert as "a voice of sanity and reason."
He has a background in government, he knows economics, and, since leaving Clark County government in 1995, he has had private-sector experience with his own consulting firm, Hobbs, Ong and Associates.
