The 7 Secrets
The knockout look is back--from fiery red lips to longs-stemmed lashes. Follow these essential primping principles for an effect that's both sophisticated and lust inspring.
We have some good news! The fad for sporting a slapdash, unprimped-on-purpose face has seen its day. What squelched it? The comeback of glamorous grown-up beauty. Today's hottest models and screen stars are flaunting a perfectly polished, seriously sexy style that hasn't been around in ages--all-woman red lipstick, real foundation, expertly arched brows, and filthy-rich-smelling scents. So you can learn to be a 21st-century glamour girl, we asked the pros what essential beauty moves you need to master. Their response; seven rules to follow whether you're sporting worn-in jeans or a temptress dress. And while putting this advice into action will add a little time to your routine, you'll know the payoff's worth it when you notice all those jaws hitting the ground around you.
1. Boast impeccably arched brows.
You'll never look polished without perfectly shaped eyebrows. Too-skimpy brows are tacky, and anything too bushy looks sloppy. The beautiful, groomed-just-enough look to go for: neat, full, and with a rounded arch (and no traces of unibrow), says Eugenia Weston, eyebrow guru and celeb makeup artist. Her best at-home tweezing tips: First, brush your brows up and pluck obvious strays. Then brush brows up again, hold the brush along the top of your brow line, and use tiny scissors to trim any hairs that peek out above the edge. Also trim the tops of the hairs in the innermost corners to make them slightly shorter than the others--this will create the illusion of a higher arch. Don't leave home without filling in sparse areas with a pencil or powder and brushing them into place. We like Senna Brow Shaper Pencil, $11.50.
2. Reacquaint yourself with base.
The dewy, sheeny face suddenly feels very last year. The new glamorous look requires flawless, shine-free skin. And we have great news for foundation-phobes: There's a new batch of bases that nix shine and even skin tone but still allow your skin to show through. We like Prescriptives Traceless Skin Responsive Tint, $32, and L'Oreal Air Wear Liquid Foundation, $11.95. For a natural look, apply it using a foundation brush or cosmetic sponge to help control the amount you use, says New York City makeup artist Denise Chaplin. Smooth a nickel-size dab of the base from your forehead to your chin in even downward strokes--this top-to-bottom motion follows the natural growth of any tiny hairs so they'll lie flat. Try Denise Chaplin NYC Foundation Brush, $50. Finish with a dusting of translucent powder to set the look.
