You were stoked to get a prime seat near the speakers at the Janet Jackson concert, but the next day, you could barely hear. "Noises over 85 decibels--concerts often hit l20 decibels--can damage tiny hair cells that conduct sound in your inner ear," explains Todd Kingdom, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Emory University in Atlanta. As a result, you can experience muffled sounds, tinnitus (a condition characterized by constant or intermittent ringing in the ears) or in very rare cases, complete deafness.
