Furthermore, youth who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) appear to be even more unprotected, according to University of Alabama - Birmingham investigators.
A new retrospective and prospective analysis of youth enrolled in the REACH (Reaching for Excellence in Adolescent Care and Health) cohort has shown that of 61 adolescents who received three doses of HBV vaccine prior to participation in the study, only 70% were protected against HBV. In youth infected with HIV who were fully vaccinated before study enrollment, the protection rate was only 41.1%, C.M. Wilson and colleagues said.
Within a year of enrolling in the study, 43 more adolescents received their third and final dose of hepatitis B vaccine. "The rates of response were similar for the HIV infected and uninfected groups (37.1% vs. 37.5%)," Wilson and coworkers noted.
Statistical analysis showed that among the 35 youngsters with HIV enrolled in the prospective portion of the study, elevated levels of certain T cells (CD8[superscript]+/CD38[superscript]+/HLA-DR[superscript]+) correlated with a lack of ...
