2001 NOV 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers from San Raffaele Hospital-Tosinvest Sanita announced the results of a new study showing that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) improves the dilatory properties of the vascular endothelium in postmenopausal women at risk for cardiovascular disease.
The study, which compared the effects of HRT and raloxifene, found that raloxifene did not share the same beneficial cardiovascular effects. The research was presented at the 12th annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), October 4-6, 2001.
"Both HRT and raloxifene are used for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women," said Dr. Giuseppe Rosano, study investigator and head of cardiovascular research at San Raffaele Hospital. "These findings show that HRT, unlike raloxifene, has additional cardiovascular benefits, which may be of importance in the prevention of cardiac events."
The study examined 20 postmenopausal women with increased cardiovascular risk.
