The recent spate of armed and often ruthless robberies in Jakarta has added to the public's concern about increasing crime in the country. Even without statistics, it is not difficult to perceive the rising trend, not only in quantitative but in qualitative terms.

Crime in Indonesia is strongly rooted in various conditions. Part of those conditions are economic, for instance the fact that 40 million people are jobless. Another condition is the prevalence in society of pragmatism, the emphasis on results rather than on processes, the tendency to take shortcuts to attain objectives, and materialism.
