Federal contracts managers need to take the time to consider their future roles in the acquisition community. Today, they have greater flexibility than in the past in developing innovative approaches and strategies to provide better business solutions to customers. A common objective among contracts professionals today is to create continuous learning organizations that will change the role of a contracts specialist to that of a business advisor. This cultural change can be initiated though encouraging horizontal integration of processes, teaming, cross-training, and role reversals. Critical to this end is the need to foster and encourage up-front involvement of the contracts specialist in the acquisition process.
