2001 OCT 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Clinical investigators from the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, presented interim data from an ongoing clinical trial of CEL-SCI Corporation's investigational therapy, Multikine, at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research.
The meeting was held in Cleveland, Ohio from October 7-11, 2001.
The focus of this clinical study is on HIV infected women with human papillomavirus (HPV) induced cervical dysplasia, the precursor stage before the development of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. This patient population was chosen because of the high morbidity/mortality and low success rate of current therapies. Since HIV infection results in immune suppression, HPV-induced cervical dysplasia in HIV infected women most often follows a more malignant and aggressive course of disease than in non-HIV infected women. Coinfection with HPV is common in HIV infected women and cervical cancer is classified as an AIDS defining illness. CEL-SCI believes that there is no other product under clinical development for these coinfected women at this time.
