2001 OCT 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Fischer Imaging Corp.'s SenoScan Full Field Digital Mammography System has been selected for use at five leading institutions that will participate in a $26 million National Cancer Institute (NCI) study to determine the accuracy of digital mammography. The centers include the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital at Harvard, Memorial Sloan Kettering's Guttman Institute in Manhattan, The Washington Radiology Group in Washington DC, and LaGrange Memorial Hospital in LaGrange Illinois.
The study, based on an NCI-approved grant to the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN), will be the first major screening study comparing full-field digital mammography with conventional film mammography. The study will involve more than 49,000 women in the United States and Canada who will undergo imaging by both digital and conventional mammography. The primary aim of the study is to compare the accuracy of digital mammography with film mammography in an asymptomatic population of women undergoing routine screening mammography.
"We are proud to have been selected to participate in this major study as it confirms the tremendous progress we have made in developing our SenoScan Full Field Digital Mammography System," said Morgan Nields, chairman of Fischer Imaging. "Following the receipt of the FDA Approvable letter in July, we are eager to be involved in a study where the higher resolution and lower x-ray dose of the SenoScan can be showcased. Our discussions with the FDA regarding final clearance of the SenoScan continue to indicate that all is well with the finalization of our application, and that we can look forward to receipt of final clearance as soon as governmental processing of our documentation will allow. This is anticipated shortly."
Smaller screening studies have demonstrated that ...
