* Toyota MR2 SPYDER

Price: $24,040

Engine: 1.8-liter I4, 138 hp, 125 lb-ft

Curb weight: 2195 lbs

Drivetrain: rwd, five-speed manual

Toyota's itsy-bitsy spyder offers a fun alternative to the perennial two-seat favorite, the Mazda Miata. Thankfully Toyota forged its own unique approach to the genre. The MR2 not only looks different-bolder-its distinctive mid-engine styling and driving dynamics give it a completely different flavor. One thing the two tin-boxes have in common: Once the flakes fall, it'd be best to leave them in the garage. For now, just button up that parka and crank up the heat if you're still thinking of driving alfresco. If anything was designed with summer in mind, it's the two-seat roadster, and for much of America, summer 2001 has come and gone.
