2001 SEP 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Alliance is offering free educational resources as part of a national public service campaign to address an unmet need in educating the general public and healthcare professionals about PTSD - a prevalent and treatable, yet commonly undiagnosed or misdiagnosed health condition.
The PTSD Alliance is the first national coalition dedicated to increasing awareness and promoting a better understanding of PTSD among the general public and medical, healthcare, and other frontline professionals who work with PTSD patients and trauma survivors who may be at risk for developing PTSD.
The PTSD Alliance includes four national organizations, representing a spectrum of healthcare issues related to PTSD. Founding members include: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG); The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA); The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS); and The Sidran Traumatic Stress Foundation.
Through its resource center (toll-free 1-877-507-PTSD) and website (www.PTSDAlliance.org), the PTSD Alliance offers free booklets and other resources produced by the four member organizations including brochures, screening tools, continuing education programs, and information about local support groups and referral services.
PTSD Alliance offerings include:
* www.PTSDAlliance.org, an online resource center for the general public, professionals and the media. The site offers general background on PTSD and links to the member organizations, which provide information on local support groups and referral services.
* Patient Education Booklet: "Hope For Recovery: Understanding Posttraumatic Stress Disorder." This 8-page booklet seeks to dispel the myths about PTSD that keep many people from recognizing the problem and obtaining help. The booklet includes a discussion of causes, risk factors and symptoms for PTSD, and provides information on treatment options and how family and friends of someone with PTSD can provide support and help in the recovery process.
