The explosion at Grande Paroisse's factory in Toulouse on 21 Sep 2001, which caused 29 deaths and injured 2500+ people, has put ammonium nitrate production under the spotlight.

When a bulk store of 300 tonnes high nitrogen content ammonium nitrate for agriculture use exploded it created a shock wave which caused FFR 5-6 bn damage in Toulouse.

Ammonium nitrate is used in making both explosives and fertilizers. 2 fertilizer grades are made in France: 33.5% nitrogen content ammonium nitrate (which is banned in some European countries) and 28% nitrogen content ammonium nitrate.
