The Committee on Safety of Medicines, an advisory group to the U.K. Medicines Control Agency, has issued a reminder to health professionals to inform patients of the potential risk of iron overdose in young children and to remind parents to keep tablets stored securely out of children's sight and reach.

Product labelling will also be changed to carry a similar warning. Dietary iron supplements are commonly taken by pregnant women and the mothers of small babies and are subsequently often present in the homes of young children. Solid dose dietary iron supplements account for around 2%-3% of hospital admissions for accidental overdose in 0-4 year olds, but fatalities are exceedingly rare.

The packaging of all licensed oral iron supplements will be amended to display the following box warning: "Warning: Contains iron. Keep out of the reach and sight of children as overdose may be fatal." A planned public education campaign will support the change in labelling and will involve professional bodies as well as the general public.
