More English women are breastfeeding their babies and significantly fewer are smoking during pregnancy according to the Infant Feeding Survey 2000.
Between 1995 and 2000, breastfeeding rates rose from 66% to 69% throughout the United Kingdom. In England the increase is particularly marked in low income households where rates have climbed from 50% to 62%.
The figures also show that the number of women smoking during pregnancy has fallen from 23% to 18% in the last five years.
Through the Government's Infant Feeding Initiative, a number of local projects have been funded over the last two years to encourage breast feeding. As part of this drive, midwives, health visitors, GPs and other health professionals have actively been providing mothers with more information about breastfeeding.
