A single course of antenatal corticosteroids, not multiple doses, should be given to pregnant women at risk for preterm birth at 24-34 weeks gestation, according to a study in the September 2001 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Antenatal corticosteroids, given to pregnant women at risk for preterm birth, help mature the lungs of the fetus and improve the chances of the premature infant's survival. After reviewing the scientific literature, researchers concluded that even though multiple courses of antenatal steroids are routinely prescribed in many hospitals, there are no data to support the practice.
