A new imaging modality may dramatically improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The modality, optical coherence tomography (OCT), is based on beaming safe infrared light into soft tissue to create extremely high resolution images of the underlying tissue layers. It offers significant advantages in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer through real-time images of precancerous lesions and early cancers. OCT can find the actual border of a tumor more accurately than the naked eye.
This can be vitally important in organ-preserving operations - to leave as much healthy tissue as possible while completely removing malignant tumors. In many situations, the edge of a cancer is only a guess by the surgeon and must be confirmed by pathological examination of the excised tissue. Positive pathology results, which often take several days, force the patient to undergo another surgery. The technology has been incorporated into an imaging device by Imalux Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio.
In the U.S. alone there are 250,000 trained endoscopists who could adopt Imalux's platform technology. Imalux currently provides ...
