The number of cases of whooping cough in the Rio Grande Valley have nearly doubled since last year, according to Texas health officials.
There were 24 cases of whooping cough, a highly contagious bacterial infection, confirmed in the valley in 2000. So far this year, there have been 42 unconfirmed cases reported in the valley, according to Texas Department of Health statistics.
Because of the increase, health officials at the TDH are advising doctors to test patients with a persistent cough.
"Most people think that pertussis (whooping cough) isn't around anymore, but if a person has had a cough more than two weeks, it could be pertussis," Dr. Brian Smith, regional medical director for the TDH, told The Monitor in McAllen.
