Xenova Group plc (XEN) has announced that its novel therapeutic vaccine, TA-NIC, which is being developed for the treatment of nicotine addiction, has entered Phase I clinical trials.
The Phase I study is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study to assess the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the TA-NIC vaccine in both smokers and non-smokers. The vaccine is administered by intra-muscular injection. In the first instance, two different dose levels are to be investigated in a variety of dosing regimens.

Currently available therapies for nicotine addiction include nicotine replacement therapy, delivered via skin patches, chewing gum or inhalers or treatment with the nicotine-free drug bupropion.
