Sri Lanka security forces and Tamil rebels have agreed to cease hostilities for four days to facilitate the immunization of children against polio in areas characterized by heavy fighting in Sri Lanka's civil war, the United Nations Children's Fund reported.
September 21-22 were declared as the "days of tranquility" during which the rebels and the security forces would refrain from any hostile action, UNICEF said in a statement. The second phase of the temporary cease-fire would be on October 19-20, 2001.
UNICEF started the practice of declaring "days of tranquility" in 1995 in a bid to eradicate polio and use the immunization campaign to motivate children to enroll themselves in school.
According to UNICEF, more than 400,000 children under 14 years of age in Sri Lanka do not go to school. Most of them are in the north and east where rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been fighting government forces since 1983 to divide Sri Lanka on ethnic lines.
