Biomira Inc. announced that its lead product candidate, Theratope vaccine, has been reviewed in the September 2001 issue of Ashley Publications' Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy, a United Kingdom bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal.
The authors of the paper are Drs. Leona A. Holmberg and Brenda M. Sandmaier. Holmberg and Sandmaier are clinical researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and professors of medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.
The paper focuses on the concept that Theratope vaccine's synthetic carbohydrate antigen, Sialyl-Tn (STn), "is an ideal candidate for active specific immunotherapy (ASI)," and that, "ASI is a promising approach to treating cancer." The STn antigen is seen on many forms of human tumours.
