2001 OCT 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
ViroLogic, Inc. announced that an enhanced version of its PhenoSense HIV drug resistance assay can measure the potential effectiveness of AIDS vaccines in development faster, more efficiently and more consistently than currently used methods, according to research presented September 6, 2001, at the AIDS Vaccine 2001 Conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This novel application may help accelerate the search for life-saving vaccines to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS worldwide. Known as a virus neutralization assay, ViroLogic's assay rapidly and accurately measures the ability of antibodies to block HIV infection. If the ViroLogic assay shows that the antibodies elicited by the vaccine effectively stop HIV infection, then that vaccine represents a good candidate for further clinical evaluation.
In the study, scientists from ViroLogic measured the neutralizing activity of well-characterized antibodies. The results obtained using the PhenoSense neutralization assay compared favorably with values obtained using conventional assays, but results were generated much more quickly with the PhenoSense assay (three days) versus the conventional assay (several weeks) due to ViroLogic's proprietary technology platform.
