The Solara SLE is the top-of-the-line sport-coupe version of Toyota's Camry sedan.

Now, there are few better values than the Camry, America's top-selling family sedan for the last four years.

But the 2001 Solara, which competes against the likes of Chrysler's Sebring and the Ford Taurus, seems like a fish out of water:

Too bland in general for "sporty" drivers, and too cramped even for small families.

That said, the SLE does have several pluses.

Its engine, a 3.0-liter V-6, is more than competent.

Mated to the 4-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission, the powerplant generates 198 horses at 5,200 RPMs, and …
