by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Obesity increases the risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but whether it does so by promoting cirrhosis, a general risk factor for HCC, or through some other mechanism is unclear.
Now researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine propose that obesity-induced fatty liver may be a premalignant condition, regardless of progression to cirrhosis.
"Hepatocyte hyperplasia, an early event during the neoplastic process, might begin before liver cirrhosis develops," suggested S.Q. Yan and colleagues.
