Researchers are hoping a vaccine they are about to study in a human trial will prevent or reduce the onset of Alzheimer disease.
Pivotal Research Centers are enrolling patients for the 15-month experiment. Scott Gardner, executive director of the Arizona chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, said two recent studies have shown that the vaccine appears to work in mice. Gardner said the vaccine trial in humans now gives hope to victims of the disease and their families.
"It's extremely, extremely promising and, yes, it's an attainable goal,'' he said.
At least 25 people with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer disease will be chosen for the clinical trial. A neurologist who founded Pivotal, Dr. Louis Kirby, said the centers have 50 patients so far who may qualify.
"The problem is there's a relatively high attrition rate for participants, so we probably need more than that,'' he said.
