KUCHING, Wed. - Will the 63 Independent candidates in tomorrow's State elections fare better than those in the 1996 polls?

In that election, two of the 60 independents won while 21 lost their RM3,000 election deposits. The independent victors were Kebing Wan (Telang Usan) and Yii Chu Lik (Meradong). Only Kebing is defending his seat in this election.

A candidate's deposit is forfeited if he or she obtains less than one- eighth of the total votes cast in the constituency contested.

The lowest number of votes garnered by a candidate in the 1996 election was the 32 by Chan Eng Chai in Meradong. …
