Mercedes-Benz SL500/SL55AMG
The SL roadster tradition continues with the SL500. With its folding hardtop, the SL500 converts from coupe to roadster in just 16 seconds with the push of a button. (A glass-roofed version is planned for mid-2002.) The new SL is full of high-tech electronics, including Sensotronic Brake Control that works with Mercedes' electronic stability program and active body control. Wrapping around all these electronic aids is a completely restyled body evoking cues from the 1954 Gullwing 300SL. The 306-hp 5.0-liter V8 does zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 6.3 seconds. With the SL 55 AMG, 100 km/h comes up in 4.7 seconds, thanks to a new mechanical supercharger located between the cylinder banks that helps the V8 kick out 476 hp. Formula One-style steering wheel paddle shifters are available to manually shift the five-speed automatic transmission.
