The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, which helped lure big-name companies such as Bookham Technology to the state in the past year, is adjusting its focus in these fuzzy economic times.

Recruitment is fading into the background as the department consciously decides to zoom in on keeping Maryland companies satisfied.

"As we go forward ... we are going to place a greater priority on supporting and retaining existing Maryland firms," said David S. Iannucci, the secretary of Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (www.choosemaryland.org).
