In 2000 generic drugs accounted for only 3.1% of overall sales of refundable drugs in France (5.9% of total sales) according to 2 CNAM studies published by the Le Monde newspaper.
These results make France the smallest consumer of generic drugs in the world, a long way behind other European countries like Poland (48%), Hungary (42%), Denmark and Germany (approximately 40%). 1 of the studies estimates that in 2 years more widespread use of generic drugs would generate savings of FFR 5 bn.
