Canada qtr. footwear output off 10.2% from '88

TORONTO (FNS) -- First-quarter Canadian footwear production and imports fell 10.2 and 6.9 percent below year-earlier levels, respectively, according to the Shoe Manufacturers Association of Canada (SMAC) statistics.

Total Canadian footwear production tumbled to 7,967,721 pairs in the quarter, versus 8,798,486 pairs a year earlier. Total shoe imports decreased to 27,471,268 pairs from 29,505,763 in first quarter 1988.

Imports took a larger share of a contracting market in the quarter, rising 0.5 percent to 78.8 percent of sales.
