The Open-and-Closed-Door Show Trial.(Brief Article)
When Afghan judges allowed nearly 70 people into a courtroom in Kabul last Saturday--including foreign journalists, diplomats, eight Western aid workers accused of spreading Christianity and their relatives--they were among the first to witness Taliban justice at work. Yet even their day in court has not cleared up much of the mystery surrounding the high-profile trial.
Until then, Islamic clerics had debated evidence against the Westerners, employees of German group Shelter Now International, behind closed doors. Officials have said the aid workers can hire their own lawyers but not precisely when they will be able to defend themselves. The penalty for proselytizing has been described as anything from brief incarceration followed by deportation, to hanging.
