Pap Tests On Women With Hysterectomies Cost Millions Of Dollars.
2001 AUG 23 - (NewsRx Network) -- Millions of Pap tests are unnecessarily performed on women who have had hysterectomies, wasting an excessive amount of time and costing millions of dollars, according to a study in the August 2001 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
After reviewing data from several U.S. databases, researchers estimate that between 10.6 and 11.6 million of the 12.5 million women with hysterectomies in the U.S. receive Pap tests that they don't need. The estimated cost to the health care system over a three-year period for these unnecessary Pap tests ranges from $375 to $505 million.
Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, point out that the majority (over 80%) of hysterectomies are performed for noncancerous conditions such as fibroids and endometriosis.
