This item describes poor 1H 2001 results and subsequent plans for job losses for big chemicals producers in the US and Europe.

In Germany, BASF and Bayer saw operating profits fall (figures given), with a cost of EUR 600-650 M in 2001 for Bayer following the withdrawal of Baycol/Lipobay.

Results are given for 8 US producers.

DuPont made $213 M net loss in 2Q 2001, and expects 3Q 2001 to be even worse.
