Some cars we love like a faithful dog. But if that dog chews or lunges inappropriately (down boy!), we reluctantly admit that some things need to change.

Volkswagen GOLF GLS 1.8T

Price: $20,425

Engine: 1.8-liter turbocharged I4, 150 hp, 155 lb-ft

Curb weight: 2915 lbs

Drivetrain: fwd, five-speed manual

We can't say enough good things about the Golf (``This Golf offers expensive-car ride, handling and quality. Golfs aren't the world's best-selling car for nothing'') or its engine, the 1.8-liter turbo four (``Positively flies, with turbo power to burn''). The Golf GLS's interior sits among the best in its class-and even ``higher'' classes-with snug fits between panels and finishes that look and feel more expensive than its sticker would indicate. Ergonomically, the Golf is near perfect. But... with an engine as ready to run as the 1.8T, we wouldn't mind a tauter chassis, one with a little less roll. As it is, the Golf offers superior handling capability. A little more sporting attitude wouldn't hurt, though.
