After going 0-8 in its first varsity season, Desert Pines shocked many by posting an 8-3 record and advancing to the second round of the playoffs last year.

Now the Jaguars are ranked ninth in the West by USA Today. While it may be difficult to justify that ranking, it's easy to see why Desert Pines is among the preseason favorites in the area.

"Last year we kind of jumped ahead quickly from where I thought we'd be," Desert Pines coach Gary Findley said. "Last year was where we thought we'd be in year three or four. Now that we're ahead, we need to play this year like we're four or five years into the program.…
