Son of former Rio Rancho chief gets 2 years of juvenile detention.

The day after his 18th birthday, Joseph Haycox of Rio Rancho was sentenced to two years of juvenile incarceration for firearms charges and probation violation.

Haycox is the son of retired Rio Rancho Public Safety Director Dencil Haycox.

Bernalillo County Prosecutor Ken Fladager described the sentence as "appropriate" and "what I would have wanted for anyone" with Haycox's criminal history.

Two years was the maximum possible penalty under the state's Children's Code.

"I don't care if he's the police chief's son," Fladager said. "He needs that two years."
