by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A National Institutes of Health study has calculated the cost to fully immunize a Vietnamese population against cholera is US$0.91 per person and that there is room for cost cutting.
"Policy decisions regarding whether to incorporate new vaccines into routine public health practice in developing countries will depend in part on the costs of vaccine purchase and of vaccine delivery," explained A.B. Naficy and colleagues.
They gauged the costs of large-scale cholera vaccination efficacy campaign, conducted in 1997, which employed locally produced, orally administered bivalent vaccine against Vibrio cholerae 01 and 0139.
The study population included 289,041 people who got two doses of vaccine, and 13,340 who got one dose, for a fully covered population rate of 83.4%, reported Naficy and associates.
