De Beers helped promote diamonds of this year's Cannes Rim Festival. At the same time it assisted in the fight against AIDS.

When De Beers sent out the word that diamond dealers were henceforth to become more public in their offerings, it's not likely they had in mind an event quite so splashy as the annual Cannes Film Festival. But if you want to get the word out, and do a good deed at the same time, you can't pick a much better venue.

When the world's press descended this year on Cannes in their thousands, seeking stories to publish in magazines, newspapers and on television, they were on hand to witness "A Diamond is Forever: Cinema Against AIDS 2001."

The glittering event, hosted by the equally glittering Elizabeth Taylor, held May 17, was the backdrop for an exhibition …
