Sam Hornish Jr. was in no mood to celebrate a third-place finish in Sunday's Gateway 250 at Madison, Illinois, despite the fact he all but locked up his first Indy Racing League championship when last year's champ, Buddy Lazier, struggled to finish 13th.
Hornish thought it should have been he, not Al Unser Jr., driving into victory lane in the 11th race of the season. Hornish had an 11-second lead at Gateway International Raceway when he pitted for fuel with 10 laps to go. Unser and fellow contender Mark Dismore stayed out and finished 1-2 on fumes. Hornish settled for third.
``I'm a sore loser,'' Hornish said.
Hornish clutched a 45-point lead over Lazier heading into the league's final two races, at Joliet, Illinois, Labor Day weekend and at Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 16. The title is all but his.
``You think?'' Hornish said with a smile. ``I'd like to go there [Joliet] and win so we don't have to worry about it at Texas.''
Unser will go to the homestretch with a better feeling, too. He ended a 16-race losing streak with his second career IRL victory (the other at Las Vegas in April 2000).
