It's tough to argue with Volkswagen of America's strategy for its 2002 GTI: The cars will get more power and a lower sticker price.
VW has boosted its 1.8-liter turbo's horsepower from 150 to 180 and torque from 155 lb-ft to 174 lb-ft. Stefan Krebsganger, VW's U.S. product strategist, said the 2002 engine's horsepower upgrade comes from increasing the turbo boost and ignition timing, as well as a revised intake for better breathing. The engine will be available with either a five-speed manual or a new five-speed automatic with Tiptronic. Krebsganger said the GTI should hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds with the manual.
