WASHINGTON -- Government-supported research helped Nuvera Fuel Cells Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., make technological breakthroughs that promise to make electric cars more practical.

But Nuvera will need more government help to develop a commercial market in the United States for its fuel cell technology, says Jeffrey M. Bentley, the company's chief operating officer.

Fuel cells, which operate like a battery, generate electricity from hydrogen.

Specifically, says Bentley, Washington needs to ante up more for research -- and remove barriers to entering local power markets by establishing a uniform interconnection standard for fuel cells.
